September is festival season in Shibuya and Harajuku.

Throughout the month, annual shrine festivals take place across the area, bringing mikoshi — traditional portable shrines — into the streets and creating a different side of Shibuya from what visitors usually see.

The Onden Shrine Annual Festival, taking place this weekend, is the first of the season’s mikoshi processions in the Shibuya and Harajuku area.

Located in the Harajuku and Jingumae area, Onden Shrine’s annual festival offers a chance to experience a traditional Japanese neighborhood festival amid one of Tokyo’s best-known fashion and shopping districts.

And this is just the beginning. Following Onden Shrine, annual festivals and mikoshi processions will continue throughout September at shrines across Shibuya, including Hatonomori Hachiman Shrine, Shibuya Hikawa Shrine, Konno Hachimangu Shrine, and Yoyogi Hachimangu Shrine.

Festival season in Shibuya is just getting started.
